Provenance Research

Comprehensive due diligence and heritage traceability

Establishing a reliable provenance remains one of the most critical and complex aspects in the authentication of African and Oceanic artworks. It often determines legal security, market value, and ethical standing.

Our Approach

We perform in-depth provenance research by systematically cross-referencing museum archives, auction catalogues, scientific publications, field documentation, and material-technical observations.

Particular attention is paid to post-colonial trajectories, documentation gaps, export history, and potential legal exposure. We assess not only what is documented, but also what is absent — a key indicator in this field.

Recent Case Study (Anonymized)

A Fang reliquary figure underwent extensive provenance research. While stylistic and material analysis pointed toward an early 20th-century origin, the documentation chain showed a significant gap between 1935 and 1960. Archival cross-referencing eventually linked the piece to a documented private collection in Belgium, allowing us to assign a high-confidence attribution while clearly noting the remaining uncertainties.
